Why Shoppers Look Beyond Ecolabels When Buying Sustainable Products: Insights for Ethical Fashion Brands
At Design Delight Studio we support clear, honest sustainability. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton, water-based inks, and recyclable packaging. A Stanford study shows a surprising fact. Although many customers say they value sustainability, their purchase choices often favor other features instead of ecolabels. This gap matters for us and other ethical brands as we work to reach true, eco‐conscious buyers in a busy market.
The Sustainability Paradox: Intent vs. Action
The Stanford study checked billions of sales points from 2012 to 2019. Many consumers say a sustainable lifestyle is key. Yet in stores, buyers focus on brand name, price, size, and ingredient lists rather than ecolabels. For example, packaging that points out cruelty-free tests or eco materials shows up on about one-third of items. Only a few even mention lower emissions or fair-trade marks. Sustainable options are often cheaper. Their eco claims do not drive purchases on their own. This shows a gap: good aims do not always result in eco-friendly buying without extra reasons.
Why Big Brands Struggle with Sustainable Shifts
Large companies often offer few sustainable items under their main brands. They prefer to start or buy small, mission-driven “fringe” brands. They do this for two main reasons:
- Cost and Risk: Changing their products to meet eco standards costs much and feels risky when most buyers want familiar features.
- Consumer Skepticism: Shoppers often doubt big firms. They fear greenwashing or false eco claims just to boost sales.
For instance, Unilever supports a smaller brand like Schmidt’s. Colgate-Palmolive runs Tom’s of Maine. These smaller lines feel more genuine. They let big firms compete without a full shift in their main products.
The Rise of Small Sustainable Brands
Smaller sustainable brands are growing fast. Their share in personal care jumped from under 5% in 2012 to 20% in 2019. Short, clear product lines help them keep strict eco standards. Customers now gladly pay more for brands that match their values. They back firms that support both nature and fair work. This shows that today’s buyers want to join a clear, ethical movement.
The Role of Regulation and Transparency
Customer demand alone is not enough to push large brands toward full sustainability. The study shows that strict rules can help. The European Union sets rules that force brands to prove their eco claims. In the US, rules are only now growing. The FDA now keeps a closer watch on personal care items, and some states ban cosmetics tested on animals. Clear rules and true ecolabels can rebuild trust. They can also push big brands to care more about the planet.
