EU Introduces Laws to Improve Sustainability in Fast Fashion
The European Union has adopted new legislation targeting fast fashion's environmental impact. Textile consumption in the EU rose from 17 kg per person in 2019 to 19 kg in 2022, while about 12 kg is discarded annually per person. The laws include extended producer responsibility, ecodesign standards, and bans on destroying unsold clothing from 2026. Why it matters: • Textile production uses significant water, land, and raw materials, contributing to environmental degradation. • Fashion accounts for pollution including microplastics and about 355 kg CO2 emissions per person yearly in the EU. • Less than 1% of used clothes are recycled into new garments, increasing landfill and incineration pressures.
What to do next: • Consider purchasing higher-quality garments designed to last longer and support circular fashion principles. • Separate textiles for collection and recycling where programs exist, in compliance with EU Waste Framework rules. • Stay informed of clothing brands’ sustainability and transparency efforts to avoid greenwashing.
