Readiness Assessment Tool: Preparing for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
Overview
On April 16, 2025, the European Commission adopted a plan. This plan, named the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030, drives the EU to make sustainable products normal. The plan picks product groups and sets policy under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). New Delegated Acts will list clear rules on product durability, reparability, recyclability, and other green marks.
Purpose of the Readiness Assessment Tool
The tool helps companies face these new rules. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and ERM made a Readiness Assessment Tool in Excel. The tool lets organizations:
- Check if they have the key product details that ESPR needs.
- Spot gaps in how ready their products or groups are for compliance.
- Act early and adjust to new rules before full enforcement begins.
Key Features
- Structured Approach: The tool meets the performance needs of Articles 6 and 7 of ESPR. Here, each word connects closely to the next to build clear links.
- Lifecycle Analysis: The tool splits checks by product parts and lifecycle stages (per Article 5(1)). Each link shows a full, tight view.
- User-Friendly Interface: Excel guides with clear steps. The tool asks for input and shows a quick, clear readiness result.
- Anticipation of Future Enhancements: Planned updates will let users filter by product type as the new Delegated Acts come.
- Support for Digital Product Passport (DPP): The tool helps prepare for the reporting needed by the DPP. This is key for ESPR compliance.
Next Steps and Integration with Circular Economy Initiatives
WBCSD now works inside the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX) framework. It builds better links for circular economy data. This work helps meet ESPR’s performance and product information needs. Each word here links closely to signal strong data ties.
How to Access the Tool
Companies that want to get ready for ESPR can download the Readiness Assessment Tool from WBCSD’s website. For more help or questions, please email:
