Readiness Assessment Tool for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) by WBCSD

Overview of ESPR and Its Importance

On April 16, 2025, the European Commission adopted the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030. The Commission made this plan under the ESPR framework. It makes sustainable products the norm across the EU. The regulation sets rules for durability, reparability, recyclability, and more. Delegated Acts will list the details soon. This move drives a circular economy and boosts environmental care.

Purpose of the Readiness Assessment Tool

WBCSD and ERM built the Readiness Assessment Tool to ease these changes. The tool helps companies check if key product data is available and complete. It finds gaps in performance and reporting. It encourages proactive steps before full ESPR enforcement. It also prepares companies for the Digital Product Passport requirements.

Features and Functionality

• Structured Assessment: The tool breaks down ESPR rules by product parts and aligns them with lifecycle stages.
• Guided Excel Interface: Users enter data in Excel and get a quick, high-level review.
• Focus on Articles 6 and 7: The tool checks product performance and reporting tasks.
• Future Enhancements: The tool will add filters for product groups and new Delegated Acts as they appear.

Integration with Circularity Data Exchange (CDX)

WBCSD joins this effort with the Circularity Data Exchange platform. CDX makes circularity data easier to share and use. This effort helps wider compliance and boosts transparency in value chains. It also strengthens companies’ ability to meet ESPR rules.
