Revolutionizing Agriculture: DOST Unveils Biodegradable Paper Mulch for Sustainable Farming in the Philippines

DOST Innovates Biodegradable Paper Mulch to Advance Sustainable Farming in the Philippines

DOST-FPRDI, part of the Department of Science and Technology, has developed a new paper mulch made from paper. This mulch breaks down naturally. It fights plastic waste and helps farmers shift to more sustainable methods. The design deals with the problems of synthetic mulches that harm our land.

Composition and Benefits

The paper mulch gets 20% of its fiber from abaca-stripping waste and 80% from old corrugated cartons. Both parts come from local sources. Engineers worked on the design for two years. The mulch breaks apart in the soil and adds nutrients as it decomposes. It stops weeds from growing. It cuts the number of pests. It saves water. It keeps the soil temperature steady. It improves soil health and boosts crop yield. This mulch gives farmers a stronger choice than plastic mulch, which can hurt the soil and add to pollution.

Current Development and Collaboration

Engr. Cesar Austria, a senior science research specialist at DOST-FPRDI, says the mulch is now under field trials. The team will start mass production if the results are good. The plan is to reach organic vegetable farmers and other growers who use plastic mulch. DOST-FPRDI has signed an agreement with JC Del Mundo Sustainable Farming School in Agoncillo, Batangas. The school will set up a demonstration farm. Local farmers will learn to use the new mulch in organic farming.

Strategic Importance

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. says the new paper mulch meets the demand for eco-friendly farming practices. The mulch will help reduce plastic pollution and fight soil degradation in the Philippines. “This paper mulch technology is ready to boost sustainable and productive farming across the country,” he said.

This project shows how the Philippine government uses new ideas for cleaner farming practices. It promises benefits for the environment and better lives for farmers.
