Revolutionizing Logistics: Sustainable Drone Delivery to Alpine Huts in South Tyrol

Flying Goods Sustainably in South Tyrol: FlyingBasket’s Pioneering Cargo Drone Project

Bolzano, October 2025 – FlyingBasket is based in South Tyrol and leads in cargo drone logistics. It completed a pilot project that used cargo drones to deliver goods. The team worked with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. They flew cargo drones in real alpine conditions. This project marks the first drone-based resupply in South Tyrol.

Key Project Highlights

  • Operation Scale: The project made 21 flights. It delivered over 1,000 kilograms of goods to four alpine huts (Borletti, Payer, Vedretta Pendente, Vallaga).
  • Payload Capacity: Each flight carries up to 120 kg.
  • Altitude Reach: Drones flew above 3,000 meters.
  • Types of Deliveries: They delivered perishable foods like eggs, milk, bread, and apple juice. They also carried heavy items such as fire extinguishers, beer kegs, wooden briquettes, and cooking oil.
  • Return Logistics: Drones brought empty crates and barrels back to the valley. This shows high efficiency and supports circular logistics.

Sustainable Alternative to Helicopter Transport

Alpine huts once relied on helicopter flights. Helicopters are costly, noisy, and emit much carbon. Now, FlyingBasket’s drones offer a quieter and emissions-free choice. This shift lowers costs and pollution and is key as tourism grows. Sustainable mountain care helps ease overtourism.

Environmental and Economic Impact

Christian Bianchi, the Provincial Councilor for Public Works, said drone deliveries cut CO₂ by 4.7 to 7.6 tons per season. This saving is like the yearly absorption of 400 to 630 trees. The new technology contributes to climate protection and improves mountain services.

Company Background and Vision

FlyingBasket began in Bolzano in 2015. Today, it is a European reference for heavy-lift cargo drones. The company stays true to its Alpine roots. CEO Moritz Moroder says drone logistics can change alpine supply chains. This blend of technology and environmental care makes mountain areas more accessible while preserving their charm.

This pilot project shows a bright future for sustainable drone logistics. It sets new standards for eco-friendly transport in mountain regions and beyond.
