How Large Retailers Like Lowe’s Inspire Sustainable Practices in Home Improvement
At Design Delight Studio we see big companies work with sustainability. We learn from them and we feel inspired. Lowe’s, a top American home improvement retailer, reached number 60 on the 2025 Top 250 World’s Most Sustainable Companies list. They choose renewable energy, ethical sourcing, and a circular economy. Their clear steps show that large actions can guide small brands, even those that make eco-friendly clothes and creative art.
Lowe’s Sustainability Roadmap: Ambitious, Measurable, and Impactful
Lowe’s builds their plan with clear, close links between ideas. They set strong goals and use results you can see. Their main aim is to hit net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This goal covers all types of emissions—Scopes 1, 2, and 3. To meet this aim, Lowe’s wants a 90% drop in emissions and to balance the rest with carbon projects.
In the short run they target a 42% drop in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 25% drop in Scope 3 emissions by 2030. These goals show they want deep change and not just simple, “green” fixes.
They use key steps, each close in idea: • Electrification: They move from fossil fuels to electric power. • Energy Efficiency: They cut energy use in stores and warehouses. • Renewable Energy: They invest in solar and wind to power daily work.
By the end of 2024, Lowe’s put rooftop solar panels on 100+ stores in California, Illinois, and New Jersey. These panels now create 100 million kilowatt-hours each year. That energy can power over 6,500 homes.
Responsible Sourcing and Circular Economy Commitment
Lowe’s plan does not stop at energy. They also care about where products come from and about cutting waste. For example: • Wood products: By 2025, all wood products will come from safe sources. In 2023 they reached 81%, and they keep moving up. • Supplier Engagement: Ninety-six percent of their main suppliers now follow sustainability goals. • Packaging: By 2030, all private brand packaging must be recyclable, reusable, or compostable. • Reforestation Investments: In 2024 they spent nearly $500,000 on reforestation in North America and Vietnam. This work restores nature and seizes carbon.
Lowe’s even designs products with a circular economy in mind. They mind every close link from the material start to a product’s end. This view makes waste prevention a key plan.
Lessons for Small Businesses and Eco Fashion Brands
Even though Lowe’s is large, we at Design Delight Studio learn from them. Here are some clear ideas: • Certification Matters: Lowe’s takes care of wood like we take care with our GOTS-certified organic cotton and OEKO-TEX® standards. We use these rules to pick safe and fair materials for our tees and sweatshirts. Learn more on our certifications page. • Made-to-Order Sustainability: Lowe’s designs with waste in mind. We keep waste low by making items only when needed. This lets us avoid overproduction and textile waste. • Transparency and Goals: Clear and measurable goals build trust. Lowe’s does this, and so do we. We update you with our sustainable collections and new arrivals. Check them out here and here.
