Siemens and Envalior Partner to Develop Sustainable Electrical Products from Used Cooking Oil
Düsseldorf, Germany – October 14, 2025 – Siemens Smart Infrastructure and Envalior join forces. They will make sustainable electrical parts using bio-based plastics from used cooking oil (UCO). This step helps bring green materials into industry.
Sustainable Innovation: From Waste to Electrical Components
Siemens now offers the SIRIUS 3RQ4 coupling relay series. Its enclosures include 70% bio-based plastic—Akulon® K225-KS B-MB. Envalior makes this plastic from UCO waste. The oil is no longer fit for food or animal feed. Using it stops pressure on food sources.
-
Material benefits:
- It is bio-based and free of halogens.
- It resists flames, heat, and chemicals.
- It works well in injection molding.
- It meets the UL94 V-0 standard at a thin 0.4mm wall.
Product Features and Industrial Applications
The relays come in three clear variants:
-
Integral relay output variant
It is built strong for harsh and explosive conditions. It is ATEX-certified. It can have gold-plated contacts and railway-grade coatings. -
Plug-in relay variant
It makes replacement quick while the device runs. It can use gold-plated contacts. -
Semiconductor output variant
It lasts a long time. It switches up to 6A with 33% lower energy loss than older models.
All units stress green design. They save energy, remove harmful halogens and PFAS, allow easy dismantling, and can be recycled.
Commitment to Circularity and Emission Reduction
Envalior follows a clear plan for a full product life cycle. They use a mass-balance system to prevent burning bio-waste. In 2024, over 50% of their electricity came from renewables. They plan to reach 100% by 2030 and cut emissions by 35%.
Strategic Industry Impact
- Siemens Smart Infrastructure fits these relays with its controllers to support smart, energy-saving systems.
- Production happens at Siemens’s Amberg plant. This choice shortens supply chains in Europe.
- Green packaging and digital documents also help save resources and cut waste.
