Union Minister Launches Organic Fisheries Cluster in Sikkim Under PMMSY
On January 6, 2025, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh – Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying – inaugurated the Organic Fisheries Cluster in Soreng District, Sikkim. He held the launch during the Northeastern Region States Meet in Guwahati, Assam. This cluster forms a key part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). It promotes sustainable, eco-friendly fisheries in India’s Northeastern Region.
Promoting Sustainable and Organic Aquaculture
Sikkim’s cluster uses eco-friendly fish farming. It avoids harmful chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides. This method cuts pollution and safeguards aquatic life. It builds on Sikkim’s strong organic farming tradition. The focus stays on farming amur carp and other carp species.
Organic fish earn a premium in local and global markets. Sikkim will use the cluster to tap this market. The step boosts exports and helps local communities with economic, environmental, and social gains.
Role of NABARD and Stakeholder Engagement
NABARD supports the project with finance and technical know-how. It backs infrastructure building and skill development. NABARD also helps form Fishers’ Cooperatives and Fisheries-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs). These groups strengthen community bonds.
The project draws in private investment. It builds Sikkim’s cold water fisheries brand and lifts tourism. Bringing local fishers and farmers into the plan drives inclusive, sustainable growth.
Cluster-Based Approach under PMMSY
PMMSY uses a cluster-based method. This method links small, medium, and large businesses close together. It improves competitiveness, cuts costs, and joins the value chain. It also broadens market access and work chances through production, processing, marketing, transport, and exports. The Department of Fisheries spots key clusters across India. Sikkim’s cluster now joins clusters in pearl, ornamental fisheries, seaweed, and tuna.
Conclusion
Sikkim’s Organic Fisheries Cluster launch marks a strong move toward responsible fisheries. The new cluster joins organic aquaculture with Sikkim’s proven organic farming. This step boosts economic potential and builds on the global push for eco-friendly food production.
