Transforming Agriculture: DOST's Biodegradable Paper Mulch for Sustainable Farming Solutions

DOST Develops Biodegradable Paper Mulch to Promote Sustainable Farming in the Philippines

The DOST-FPRDI created a paper mulch that works with nature. The scientists made it to replace synthetic plastic. The mulch helps soil, boosts crops, and supports organic farmers.

Composition and Benefits

The mulch uses two main parts. It takes 20% of waste from abaca stripping and 80% of recycled cartons. The paper breaks down in soil and gives nutrients. It stops weeds and pests. It saves moisture. It keeps the soil at a steady temperature. These features come close together to serve the farm better than plastic.

Development and Field Trials

The team spent two years to design the mulch. The paper mulch now faces tests in the field. A successful trial will lead to more production. The team signed an agreement with JC Del Mundo Sustainable Farming School in Agoncillo, Batangas. The school will show the mulch on a demo farm. Farmers learn organic practices there.

Environmental Impact and Future Outlook

Plastic waste and poor soils no longer fit the future. The biodegradable mulch meets greener calls. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. praises the mulch. He supports the shift to eco-friendly farming. When scaled up, the mulch helps farms work with nature across the Philippines.
