Navigating the Future of Eco-Friendly Innovation: Your Essential Guide to the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

Preparing for the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): WBCSD’s Readiness Assessment Tool

On April 16, 2025, the European Commission set the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030 in motion. The plan names clear goals under the ESPR. The ESPR aims to make sustainable products common in the EU. It sets strict demands on durability, reparability, and recyclability. New Delegated Acts will carry these rules forward.

Introducing the Readiness Assessment Tool

WBCSD and ERM built a Readiness Assessment Tool to help companies follow ESPR rules. This Excel tool lets you:

  • Evaluate key product details that ESPR demands.
  • Identify gaps and act before issues grow.
  • Meet requirements in Articles 6 and 7 by sharing performance and product data.
  • Check several stages of a product’s life with a focus on sustainability as detailed in Article 5(1).

The tool uses a guided interface. You simply add your current data, and it gives a high-level check of your preparedness. This helps you face challenges like the upcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP).

Future Developments & Circularity Data Exchange

WBCSD will improve the tool over time. Soon, you will be able to filter assessments by product or product group as new Delegated Acts appear. This work joins with the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX) initiative. The CDX aims to:

  • Improve access to circularity data.
  • Support compliance with strict ESPR performance and data rules.
  • Enable smooth sharing of data between businesses and stakeholders.

Access and Support

Companies that wish to use the Readiness Assessment Tool can download it from the WBCSD platform. If you need help or have questions, reach out here:

Contextual Resources

WBCSD also offers more resources on sustainable products and the circular economy, including:

  • Packaging data exchange standards for better regulatory compliance.
  • Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) Enabling Solutions Guide to track circularity.
  • Protocols for corporate plastics disclosure to boost transparency and trust.

By making early preparation easy and offering clear insights with the Readiness Assessment Tool, WBCSD helps businesses move smoothly toward a sustainable, circular product economy in line with EU rules. This proactive approach cuts compliance risks and makes companies leaders in sustainable product innovation.
